Latvian is a Baltic language spoken by around 1.5 million people, and it is the official language of Latvia, a member of the European Union. It is one of only two living Baltic languages, alongside Lithuanian, but the two are not mutually intelligible — Latvian has evolved its own distinct grammar, vocabulary and sound system over the centuries.

It also keeps a pitch accent, where syllables can carry different tones that distinguish meaning.
