Finnish is spoken by around 5.5 million people and is an official language of Finland and the European Union. Unlike most languages of Europe, it is not Indo-European: it belongs to the Uralic family and is a close relative of Estonian and a more distant cousin of Hungarian. Finnish recordings span news, business, academia, government and creators alike.

ConvertSpeech transcribes them automatically. Upload your audio or video and our speech-recognition engine writes out the spoken Finnish with punctuation, ready to copy into a document, subtitle file or translation tool. It runs in your browser, needs no installation, and your first minutes are free with no account required.

How ConvertSpeech handles spoken Finnish

Finnish is a highly agglutinative language: instead of separate prepositions and articles, it stacks suffixes onto a word stem, with up to fifteen grammatical cases plus possessive and other endings. A single word can therefore carry what would be a whole phrase in English and grow very long, so the engine has to recognise these long, inflected forms rather than a handful of fixed dictionary words. ConvertSpeech is tuned for standard Finnish and reproduces these forms as natural written text.

The pronunciation of Finnish is famously regular — it is written very much as it is spoken, with a near one-to-one match between letters and sounds and consistent vowel harmony within a word. That transparency helps recognition, but the largest factor in accuracy is still recording quality — a clear signal with little background noise beats everything else.
